The U. S. Food and Drug Administration has granted a temporary stay of its approval of a generic version of a popular erectile dysfunction drug.
The agency has granted tentative approval for a generic version of Viagra, the first drug to market in the U. S., and it is expected to launch the generic version within the first week of July, a source familiar with the matter said.
Viagra is the drug’s first-ever rival to Cialis, the drug’s equivalent to the popular prescription medication Pravastatin, among others.
The Food and Drug Administration has granted tentative approval of an alternative to Viagra for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, according to a written response to the FDA’s request.
The company has said that it will continue to market the drug for its other drugs.
The FDA said it is reviewing whether the generic version of Viagra will be covered under the Affordable Care Act and whether a generic version would meet or exceed the requirements of the new law.
“This is the first time that generic competition has come up with a drug for a treatment that has the same active ingredient as the brand-name drug but is not covered under the Affordable Care Act,” said FDA spokesman William Smith. “We are committed to bringing this drug to market as soon as possible.”
Viagra, which is available in generic form under the brand name Cialis, is the drug’s second-biggest seller in the U. and has been approved by the FDA for use in more than 30 countries.
The drug is not available in the U. market as of this weekend, which is the date of its tentative approval, according to a statement from Pfizer.
Pfizer said it is reviewing whether the generic version of the drug will be covered under the Affordable Care Act and whether a generic version would meet or exceed the requirements of the new law.
The company has said that the drug’s approval will go through an independent review by an independent panel of the FDA’s health regulatory agency, which is overseeing a review of drug approvals for generic drugs.
The FDA said that it is reviewing the agency’s decision and is consulting with pharmaceutical companies about the company’s proposed approach.
